Rattan TATA ko gussa kyon aata hai!

It’s nice to grandiloquently sound the bugle of hyperbole and enact illusory scenes of heroism when you are not actually in the line of fire. It’s even more comforting when your thunderous sound bites that reek of bravado, emanate from the safety of the idiot box. No wonder, many Indians went starry-eyed in admiration when Ratan Tata, chairman of the $22 billion Tata group made a melodramatic announcement recently that he will not budge even if a gun is put on his head.

The gun, of course, was metaphorical. And Tata was referring to the controversy that surrounds the acquisition of prime agricultural land in Singur (West Bengal) for the so-called Rs.1 lakh car project of Tata Motors. His dissatisfaction over the proceedings was clearly visible in his words, “I happen to know that some of our competitors are also fuelling some of this fire, they would be very happy if the project gets delayed... I am unfortunately a person who has oft en said, you put a gun to my head and pull the trigger or take the gun away, I won’t move my head.”
